Muiredach's High Cross

The sandstone cross stands 5.8 meters tall and features intricate carvings depicting biblical stories across its four faces through 124 sculpted figures.

Dating from around 875 AD, this stone monument bears an inscription indicating its creation during the time of Abbot Muiredach of Monasterboice monastery.

The carved panels on the cross served as visual teaching tools for early medieval Irish communities, illustrating religious narratives for those unable to read.

Located in County Louth, the cross remains accessible year-round without entrance fees, allowing visitors to examine the detailed stone carvings up close.

The cross contains over 70 individual biblical scenes centered around a Last Judgment scene, making it one of the most detailed early medieval stone monuments.
