Oshrat, Community settlement in Western Galilee, Israel
Oshrat is a community settlement in Western Galilee, Israel, within the Mateh Asher Regional Council area, located close to the Mediterranean coast. It sits on gentle hillside terrain surrounded by agricultural land and other small localities.
Oshrat was founded in 1983 as an expansion of the nearby Moshav Amka, during a period when communities in northern Israel were growing in a planned way. This type of new settlement was common across Galilee at the time.
The name Oshrat is rooted in the ancient tribe of Asher, whose territory once covered this part of the Galilee, and the same reference appears in the name of the surrounding regional council, Mateh Asher. This connection between place names and biblical geography is something a visitor can notice across many villages in the area.
Oshrat is a residential community with no tourist facilities, so a visit works best when combined with an outing to the wider Western Galilee area. Road access is straightforward, but public transport within the settlement is limited.
Although Oshrat was created as an extension of Moshav Amka, it developed its own community identity distinct from the cooperative structure of a traditional moshav. This difference reflects the variety of rural community models that coexist across the Galilee.
