Byzantine church in Nahariya, Byzantine church archaeological site in Nahariya, Israel.

The Byzantine church in Nahariya is an archaeological site featuring a mosaic floor of roughly 500 square meters containing over 100 medallions depicting daily life scenes, animals, and Christian symbols in multiple colors. The restored mosaic surface and architectural elements remain visible under a protective structure.

The church was built around 550 CE on the site of an earlier temple, showing the spread of Christianity in the region. It was destroyed during the Persian-Sassanid invasion in 614 CE, marking the end of this Byzantine settlement.

The Greek inscriptions in the mosaic show that an archbishop of Tyre commissioned this church, revealing the wealth and religious power of the region at that time. These details tell you how important this place was as a center of church authority.

The site is protected by a shelter funded by Bielefeld, Germany, and is easy to access for visitors. Your visit is best on clear days when the mosaic details and colors show up well.

The central rosette pattern of the mosaic creates a three-dimensional optical effect that has stayed intact for over 15 centuries. This skillful design shows the craftsmanship of the Byzantine artisans.
