Byzantine church in Nahariya, Byzantine church archaeological site in Nahariya, Israel.
The 500-square-meter mosaic floor contains more than 100 medallions displaying scenes of daily life, animals, and Christian symbols in multiple colors.
Built around 550 CE on the site of an earlier temple, the church complex was destroyed during the Persian-Sassanid invasion of 614 CE.
The mosaic inscriptions in Greek indicate that an archbishop of Tyre commissioned the church, reflecting the wealth and religious influence of the period.
The site remains protected by a structure funded by Bielefeld, Germany, and offers visitors a view of the restored mosaic floor and architectural elements.
The central rosette of the mosaic creates a three-dimensional optical effect that has remained intact through fifteen centuries of existence.
