Tzippori is an agricultural moshav in the Jezreel Valley, in northern Israel, built across hilly terrain with residential homes and working farms. It sits close to an archaeological national park that preserves the ruins of the ancient city of Sepphoris.
Tzippori was founded in 1949 by Jewish immigrants from Turkey, in the early years after the State of Israel was established. The settlement took the name of the ancient city of Sepphoris that once stood on this same hill.
The name Tzippori comes from the Hebrew word for bird, likely a reference to the hilltop position that looks out over the valley below. Visitors walking through the settlement notice the mix of working farms and tended gardens that define the pace of daily life here.
Comfortable walking shoes are a good idea because the terrain is hilly and uneven in places. Having a car makes it easier to reach the nearby national park and other points of interest in the surrounding area.
Some residents of the moshav breed parrots alongside more traditional livestock like sheep and dairy cattle, which is an uncommon activity for a farming village. This variety of production reflects how small agricultural communities find different ways to stay economically active.
