Nachlaot is a residential neighborhood in central Jerusalem organized into 32 distinct sections linked by narrow lanes. The area features historic houses, enclosed courtyards, and small synagogues distributed throughout.
Nachlaot emerged in the late 1870s when overcrowding within Jerusalem's Old City prompted people to build the first neighborhoods beyond the walls. Early settlements like Even Yisrael and Mishkenot Yisrael expanded rapidly as families settled in the new areas.
The neighborhood contains over 300 synagogues within just a few blocks, including the Ades Synagogue, which serves as the main community center for Syrian Jews. This concentration of prayer houses shapes daily life and makes it a major religious hub.
