Degania Alef

Degania Alef is a kibbutz located south of the Sea of Galilee in the Jordan Valley, positioned well below sea level. The settlement features residential buildings, agricultural fields, vegetable plots, and livestock areas managed with contemporary irrigation technology.

The kibbutz was established in 1910 and became the first collective settlement of its kind in the region. Its founding marked the start of a new form of agricultural community that later served as a model for many other similar settlements.

Members share daily meals in the communal dining hall and gather regularly to discuss decisions affecting their settlement. The rhythm of life here centers on collective work and shared responsibility for the community's wellbeing.

The settlement is accessible via Highway 90, which runs through the Jordan Valley and offers good connections. It is advisable to visit in the early morning during warmer months, as temperatures in this depression can become very high.

The kibbutz received the Israel Prize in 1981, one of the country's highest state honors. The award recognized its role in developing innovative farming approaches and its influence on the cooperative movement.
