Sheikh Jarrah, Residential district in East Jerusalem, Israel and Palestine
Sheikh Jarrah is a residential neighborhood in East Jerusalem with stone houses along Nablus Road. The area includes diplomatic missions and medical facilities north of the Old City.
Rabah al-Husayni built the first modern residence in 1865 and established the settlement for Muslim families from Jerusalem. The neighborhood grew during the following decades as a preferred residential area for wealthy residents.
The district contains the tomb of Sheikh Hussam al-Din al-Jarrahi, a 13th-century physician who served Saladin, and the tomb of Simeon the Just.
Several international organizations operate facilities in the neighborhood, including St. Joseph's French Hospital and the St. John of Jerusalem Eye Hospital. The area is accessible via Nablus Road.
The tomb of Sheikh Hussam al-Din al-Jarrahi from the 13th century sits in the neighborhood and gave the area its name. The tomb of Simeon the Just also lies nearby.
