Etzion Airbase, Military airbase in Negev Desert, Israel
Etzion Airbase is a military installation in the Negev Desert south of Beersheba. The facility has multiple runways, hangars, and training centers spread across a wide desert area.
The base started in 1947 as an airfield for the Haganah and grew into a major facility after Israeli independence was established. Following the withdrawal from Sinai in the early 1980s, it underwent significant expansion and modernization.
Three distinct squadrons operate at the facility, including the Lions of the South, First Jet, and Golden Eagle units, each maintaining specific operational roles.
Access to the base is highly restricted since it is an active military facility. Visitors should know that the area is far from typical tourist routes.
Following the Camp David Accords and withdrawal from Sinai, Etzion received substantial modernization in 1983, expanding to accommodate relocated military capabilities.
