Red Canyon, Natural canyon in Eilat Mountains, Israel.
Red Canyon is a deep gorge in the Eilat Mountains with narrow passages carved into sandstone displaying red, orange, and brown tones throughout. The canyon features sections where rock walls come close together and natural formations create winding pathways through the landscape.
The gorge was carved over millions of years by water erosion cutting through sandstone in the Eilat Mountains, gradually creating deep passages and natural corridors. Regional groups have traveled through these pathways for thousands of years, making them part of the area's long human history.
The site holds meaning for local people as a natural formation that seems almost painted, with its vivid red and orange tones making it feel like an open-air gallery. This landscape reflects the relationship between the region's inhabitants and the desert environment that surrounds them.
The site offers two trail options for visitors to choose from, a shorter route and a longer loop, both fitted with metal equipment for safe passage through narrow sections. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip since the ground can be uneven and some passages require climbing through tight spaces.
In some sections the path narrows to arm's width, requiring visitors to move sideways and squeeze through between red rock faces. These tight passages have metal handles bolted directly into the stone to help people navigate safely through.
