American Independence Park, park in Judaean Mountains, Israel
American Independence Park is a large nature reserve in the Judaean Mountains spanning about 7,500 acres (3,000 hectares). The terrain includes rolling hills with trees, hiking trails, viewpoints, and remnants of buildings from different periods including Mamluk and Crusader times.
The area has been inhabited since the times of Crusaders and Mamluks, with ruins from these periods still visible throughout the grounds. The park itself was established to honor and preserve the land with support from American donors and stewardship by the Jewish National Fund.
The park is named to honor American support for Israel and the friendship between the two nations. Visitors encounter memorials and markers throughout the grounds that acknowledge this relationship and the generosity of American donors who helped preserve the land.
The park has no entrance fee and is freely accessible to visitors at any time with good walking shoes recommended. A picnic area is available for meals, and nearby trails offer options ranging from short walks to hikes lasting several hours depending on your preference.
A popular trail descends into Nahal Ktalev, a dry riverbed lined with bright orange Ktalev trees that stand out as a botanical rarity. Along this route, visitors can also spot the abandoned Bar Giora train station, a remnant of the railway that once served the region.
