Shemurat Har HaNegev

Shemurat Har HaNegev is a nature reserve covering mountains, plateaus, and valleys that create a complex patchwork of desert habitats. The terrain features deep canyons, rocky ridges, and sandy areas that together form a diverse landscape.

The reserve was established in 1989 by Israeli authorities to protect the ecological character of the Negev region. This decision reflected growing recognition of the need to safeguard natural habitats in this area.

Scientists and researchers regularly visit the reserve to study and document the adaptations of local species to the challenging desert environment.

Marked trails run through the reserve and are most accessible between November and April when temperatures allow for extended outdoor activity. Outside these months, conditions become harsh due to extreme heat.

Many plant and animal species here have evolved specialized adaptations to survive extreme dryness, such as water-saving leaf structures or nocturnal activity patterns. These survival strategies are the result of thousands of years of evolution in this harsh setting.
