Bharatpur, Ancient fortified city in Rajasthan, India
Bharatpur is a fortified town in Bharatpur district, Rajasthan, about 180 kilometers (112 miles) south of New Delhi. The town consists of narrow lanes between old walls, with a historic fort as its center and residential neighborhoods spreading outward.
The Sinsinwar Jats founded the town in 1733 and built a fort that resisted several sieges. The place later came under British control in the 19th century.
The city takes its name from Laxman, brother of the god Rama, who is said to have meditated here. Many residents speak Braj Bhasha alongside Hindi, an old language used in the region for centuries.
The railway station sits centrally and links the town to Delhi, Jaipur, Agra, and Mumbai through regular train connections. Most sights lie within the old town walls and can be reached on foot.
During the Holi festival in spring, many men wear traditional white garments and dance through the streets with drums and singing. The celebrations last several days and draw visitors from across the region.
