Hindupur, Market town in Anantapur district, India.
Hindupur is a town in Anantapur district, close to the border between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. The settlement sits at roughly 620 meters elevation and spreads over several square kilometers with residential neighborhoods, commercial streets, and agricultural trading centers.
The settlement emerged under Maratha rulers in the early 18th century, when Murari Rao Ghorpade and his family were active in the region. The place later developed into a trading hub for agricultural produce from surrounding villages.
The town takes its name from Sri Hindu Rao, whose family gained influence here in the early 18th century under Maratha administration. Local temples draw pilgrims from neighboring regions today, and agricultural markets shape the weekly rhythm of daily life for residents.
The town lies roughly 100 kilometers from Bengaluru and can be reached via National Highway 44 or by train. Visitors can communicate in English, Telugu, and Kannada, as the region sits at the language border between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka.
The literacy rate here reaches over 76 percent, well above the Andhra Pradesh average. Despite this high education level, the town has few higher education institutions, so many young people move to larger cities for university studies.
