Sindhudurg district, Administrative district in Konkan division, India
Sindhudurg is a district in the Konkan division of Maharashtra state, running along the western coast beside the Arabian Sea. The landscape shifts between rice paddies, mango groves, and sandy coves, while several rivers flow through the area.
The district was carved out of the larger Ratnagiri district in 1981 and takes its name from a 17th-century fort. The coast served as an important trading and naval base during the colonial period.
Fishing villages along the shore rely on traditional wooden boats and daily catches from the Arabian Sea. Local markets sell fresh seafood, coconut products, and produce from farms that stretch inland.
National highways connect the towns, and the Konkan Railway stops at several stations within the district. The best time to travel is outside monsoon season, when coastal roads remain passable.
The area around Devgad produces Alphonso mangoes, which are harvested between March and May. Some temples along the shore are only reachable at low tide via stone steps.
