Bhagwantgad, Military fort in Sindhudurg district, India
Bhagwantgad is a fort located on the northern bank of Kalaval creek in Sindhudurg district, sitting on a small wooded area that rises above the surrounding landscape. The main building that survives in decent shape is the Siddheshwar temple within the fort walls.
Pant Pratinidhi built this fort in the 18th century to monitor the Sawants of Sawantwadi in the region. The British East India Company took control in 1818 when the garrison abandoned it upon seeing British forces approach.
The Siddheshwar temple within the fort remains the only structure in good condition, representing the architectural heritage of Maharashtra's defensive structures.
The fort is best reached from nearby Malvan, which serves as the closest departure point for visitors. Small boats can be arranged from Kavawadi village to ferry people across Kalaval creek and access the fort site.
The British East India Company captured the fort on March 29, 1818, after the garrison fled upon noticing British troops crossing the territory.
