Jayankondam, human settlement
Jayankondam is a city in Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu with more than fifty thousand residents. The town is centered on agriculture, trade, and education, with schools, colleges, hospitals, shops, and a railway station connecting it to other regions.
The town was originally called Nellimanagramam and was renamed under King Rajendracholan to commemorate his military victory. It grew in importance during the British period and later developed into a first-grade municipality in the current Ariyalur district.
Jayankondam is rooted in farming traditions and local trades passed down through families over many generations. The community gathers regularly in the town center and markets, where people meet to trade goods and share stories.
The town is accessible by rail through Jayankondam Junction and has a central bus station with connections to nearby places. For air travelers, Trichy Airport is about eighty kilometers away and offers flights to other parts of India.
The town was named after King Rajendra Chola I and sits near Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the former capital of the Chola empire with the UNESCO World Heritage Brihadisvara temple. A locally found Buddha statue shows that Buddhism was once practiced here and is now cared for by the archaeological department.
