The institute began operations in December 1959 at the Harcourt Butler Technological Institute before relocating to its current site in 1963 under architect Achyut Kavinde's design. This move marked the start of its development as an independent research and teaching center.
The Student Gymkhana organizes regular activities through clubs and societies, with students participating in sports competitions and technical festivals throughout the year.
The campus is accessible by public transport and has designated visitor areas for those interested in the architecture and research facilities. Walking through the grounds allows you to experience different sections and understand the layout of academic buildings.
In 2013, the institution launched a helicopter commuter service to Lucknow, becoming the first academic institution in India to offer aerial transport. This service remains a distinctive feature showing the institution's innovative approach.
