Hassan district, Administrative district in Mysuru division, India
Hassan district encompasses eight distinct talukas across the southern part of Karnataka, situated between the Western Ghats and eastern plains.
The district formed part of the Hoysala Empire from 1000 to 1334 CE, with Belur serving as the early capital before shifting to Halebidu.
The district receives its name from the Hindu deity Haasanamba, who stands as the principal goddess of Hassan town and guides local religious practices.
The region maintains strong agricultural production with 45 percent of cultivated areas receiving irrigation through an extensive canal network from major rivers.
The population of Hassan district experienced a substantial decrease during the 1876-1878 famine, dropping from 518,987 to 428,344 inhabitants.
