Hassan district, Administrative district in Mysuru division, India
Hassan district covers eight talukas in southern Karnataka, spread between the Western Ghats and the eastern plains. Its landscape shifts from forested hills in the west to flat farmland farther east.
Between 1000 and 1334, the area belonged to the Hoysala Empire and housed two of its capitals. Belur served as the seat of power first, before authority shifted to Halebidu.
The area takes its name from Haasanamba, revered as the chief goddess in Hassan town. Her temple continues to draw pilgrims and shapes religious life throughout the region.
Farming dominates the region, with nearly half the fields watered through canal systems fed by major rivers. Those exploring the area will find good road connections between the individual talukas.
The great famine between 1876 and 1878 caused the population to drop by over 90,000 people. This decline shows how severely drought affected a community dependent on farming.
