Ranchi is the capital of Jharkhand and sits on the Chota Nagpur plateau at an elevation of around 2,100 feet (640 meters), surrounded by forested hills and waterways. The town spreads across several neighborhoods connected by main roads and old railway lines, with newer residential zones sitting alongside older markets and administrative quarters.
British colonial authorities established a retreat here in the 19th century to escape the summer heat of the plains, laying the foundation for later urban growth.
