Ranchi, Capital city in Jharkhand, India.
Ranchi is the capital of Jharkhand and sits on the Chota Nagpur plateau at an elevation of around 2,100 feet (640 meters), surrounded by forested hills and waterways. The town spreads across several neighborhoods connected by main roads and old railway lines, with newer residential zones sitting alongside older markets and administrative quarters.
British colonial authorities established a retreat here in the 19th century to escape the summer heat of the plains, laying the foundation for later urban growth. After India gained independence in 1947, the area evolved into an industrial node until Jharkhand was formed as a separate state in 2000 and this town was designated as the new capital.
The town is home to several well-known cricket players and has grown into an important hub for the sport in India. The Jharkhand State Cricket Association Stadium draws spectators from around the country when national competitions and training camps take place.
Birsa Munda Airport is located around 4 miles (7 kilometers) from the center and connects the town to other major cities in India. The main railway stations offer regular services to Kolkata, Delhi, and other destinations, while several national highways make travel by bus or car straightforward.
The area around this town was a hub for heavy industry in the first decades after independence, hosting large manufacturing plants for machinery and steel. Today, some of these facilities have been converted into smaller enterprises while the economy shifts more toward services and education institutions.
