Leh–Manali Highway, Mountain road in Ladakh, India
The 479-kilometer Leh-Manali Highway crosses five mountain ranges and connects Leh in Ladakh to Manali in Himachal Pradesh through numerous mountain passes.
Construction of this strategic mountain road started in 1964, with teams working simultaneously from both ends until its completion in 1989 as the second land route to Ladakh.
The highway brings together different communities, from military personnel and construction workers to local residents and travelers, creating a varied social environment along its path.
The road remains accessible only from May to October due to winter snow conditions, requiring travelers to carry sufficient supplies across its 350-kilometer stretch without settlements.
The highway reaches an elevation of 5,328 meters at Taglang La pass, making it one of the highest vehicle-accessible mountain passes in India.
