Panvel, Transportation hub in Raigad district, India.
Panvel is a city in Raigad district, Maharashtra, India, serving as a junction between Mumbai and the Konkan coast. The built-up area spreads from the Gadhi River to the foothills of mountains, crossed by railway lines and wide through roads.
In 1852, the first municipal council in Maharashtra state was formed here, introducing a new form of local self-governance. The expansion to a municipal corporation followed more than a century and a half later in October 2016.
The name comes from the Sanskrit word Pānavallī and connects to the tradition of local vegetable and fruit markets. Vendors still sell fresh produce on street markets that shape daily life for residents.
The railway station sits centrally and connects suburban lines from Mumbai with long-distance trains heading south, so travelers often change here. Road routes to the east lead into the mountains, while western paths go toward the coast.
Not far from the city, a new international airport is under construction that will fundamentally change Mumbai's connectivity. The building site already attracts investors and new housing developments to surrounding villages.
