Pāmban Island, Sacred island in Tamil Nadu, India
Pāmban Island is an island off the southern coast of Tamil Nadu, extending from Pamban township to Dhanushkodi. It is connected to mainland India by the Pamban Bridge and features flat terrain, tropical vegetation, and the prominent Ramanathaswamy Temple.
The island was severely impacted by a cyclone in 1964 that destroyed the town of Dhanushkodi at its eastern end, leaving it abandoned. This disaster significantly changed settlement patterns and left behind structures that remain visible today.
The Ramanathaswamy Temple stands as the spiritual center of the island, drawing pilgrims year-round who walk its extensive corridors. Visitors can observe how religious practice shapes daily rhythms and the relationship islanders maintain with their sacred landscape.
The island has a tropical climate with temperatures ranging from 25 to 35°C (77 to 95°F) and receives most rainfall from October through January. Visitors should wear light clothing and expect rain during these wetter months.
Mount Gandamadana rises from the flat island landscape and offers views across the water toward Sri Lanka from its summit. This vantage point reveals the proximity between the two land masses.
