Almora district, Mountain district in Kumaon division, India
The Almora district extends across multiple mountain ridges at 1646 meters elevation, containing dense forests and numerous small settlements throughout its territory.
The district gained prominence in 1815 when British forces established their regional headquarters there following the conclusion of the Anglo-Gorkha war.
Local residents of the district maintain traditional Kumaoni customs through folk performances, regional crafts production, and seasonal mountain festivals.
Kathgodam railway station, located 90 kilometers from the district center, serves as the primary transportation hub for visitors accessing the region.
The district contains over 4,000 plant species across four distinct vegetation zones, from tropical lowlands to alpine heights, supporting leopards and black bears.
