Pachmarhi, Mountain settlement in Narmadapuram, India
Pachmarhi sits at 1100 meters (about 3600 feet) elevation in the Satpura Range and contains several valleys with waterfalls and natural sandstone caves. The settlement extends across forested hills and narrow gorges in central India.
Captain James Forsyth founded the settlement in 1857 during a survey expedition and established a military base there. British forces used the hilltop site as an administrative center because of its cooler climate.
The five ancient caves carved into sandstone hills hold deep connections to Hindu mythology, particularly the story of Pandava brothers from Mahabharata.
Visitors can reach the settlement through Pipariya railway station, located 40 kilometers away, with regular taxi connections. The best time to visit runs from October through June when weather conditions remain comfortable and trails stay accessible.
The settlement serves simultaneously as a military base and a nature reserve inside a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Visitors can observe wild animals and rare plant species in close proximity to inhabited areas.
