Shoranur, town in Kerala, India
Shoranur is a small town in Palakkad district, Kerala, situated along the Bharathapuzha River. It has a modest character with narrow streets where houses and shops sit close together, and is notable for its large railway station, the biggest in Kerala by area, which serves trains traveling across the country.
The town has a history stretching back many centuries, once part of the Nedunganad Swaroopam kingdom and later under the Zamorin of Calicut's control. When the British arrived, it became part of Malabar District, and it later developed into a modern administrative center with official local government status.
The town hosts traditional dance forms like Kathakali and Koodiyattam at the nearby Kalamandalam cultural center. These evening performances reflect the region's artistic heritage and offer visitors insight into local customs and creative traditions.
The town is well connected by buses and its railway station, offering simple accommodations in guesthouses and small hotels. Auto rickshaws and buses are the most common ways to get around, with most locations accessible on foot or by short rides through the town.
In December 2024, a poet published a book titled 'From Chiramannur to Shoranur' exploring the town's history and how its name and landscape have changed over time. The work blends research with personal stories and was presented at a local festival.
