Gurudongmar Lake, Sacred lake in Mangan district, India.
Gurudongmar Lake is a high-altitude lake in the Mangan district of northeastern Sikkim, resting at 5,148 meters (16,890 feet) with open views of several snow-covered peaks. The blue water surface forms a sharp contrast against the barren slopes of rock and ice around it.
In the 8th century, Guru Padmasambhava traveled through the region and touched the lives of local people with his teachings. Later, followers of the Sikh tradition joined in devotion, adding a second layer of religious meaning to the water.
The name recalls Guru Padmasambhava, while locals also maintain devotional practices from the Sikh tradition. Pilgrims of both faiths visit the shore to meditate or perform rituals.
Visitors need a special permit from authorities because of the proximity to international borders and the extreme elevation. On site, it helps to walk slowly and dress in warm layers, as temperatures and wind can shift quickly.
A portion of the surface remains ice-free even during the harsh Himalayan winter, possibly due to an underground heat source or unusual water circulation. This condition deepens the belief among devotees that divine forces are at work.
