Saundatti, Religious pilgrimage town in Belagavi district, India
Saundatti is a town in Belagavi district situated at an elevation of 610 meters (2,000 feet). Several temples dot the landscape, and the large Renuka Saagara reservoir lies nearby.
The town served as the capital of the Ratta dynasty from 875 to 1230 AD, when rulers built fortifications and temples here. This period shaped the religious and architectural heritage that remains today.
The Yellamma Temple is dedicated to a form of Goddess Durga and draws worshippers year-round. Temples are woven into daily life here, serving as gathering places where people come to pray and celebrate together.
The town is about 78 kilometers from Belagavi and 41 kilometers from Dharwad, with good road access. Basic lodging is available, and connections to larger cities in Karnataka make it easy to reach.
The Savadatti Fort is built with eight defensive bastions and houses the Kadasiddheshwara temple within its stone walls. This structure from the 18th century shows how religious and defensive buildings were integrated together.
