Senapati district, Administrative district in Manipur, India
Senapati district is an administrative area in the mountainous northeast of Manipur. The region comprises hilly terrain at elevations between around 1,000 and 1,800 meters (3,300 and 5,900 feet), with schools, hospitals, and banking services spread across the landscape.
The district was created in 1969 from the former Manipur North territory. Administration moved its seat from Karong to Senapati town in 1976.
Several ethnic groups including the Mao, Maram, and Poumai call this district home, each with their own languages and traditions. Christianity shapes much of daily life and community gatherings throughout the region.
Plan for mountain conditions and cooler temperatures due to the high elevations across the region. It helps to gather local information before exploring, as roads can vary and services are spread out over the hilly landscape.
Dzuko Valley within this district contains lily varieties found nowhere else in the world except this remote northeastern corner. Botanists and nature enthusiasts visit to study these rare alpine flowers growing in their natural habitat.
