Sriperumbudur, Religious town in Kanchipuram district, India
Sriperumbudur is a town in Kanchipuram district of Tamil Nadu, located about 40 kilometers southwest of Chennai. The town forms part of the Chennai Metropolitan Area and sits at an elevation of 37 meters (121 feet) above sea level.
The town marks the birthplace of Hindu philosopher Ramanuja in the 11th century, whose teachings shaped Vaishnavism traditions. In 1991, this location became the site where Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated, now commemorated with a memorial.
The Adikesava Perumal Temple contains a statue installed during Ramanuja's lifetime and remains central to Hindu religious practices in the region.
Regular bus services run from Chennai and take between one and two hours depending on traffic conditions. Hotels and guesthouses in different price ranges are available in the town, especially along the main roads.
A fossil park in Gunduperumbedu displays marine fossils ranging from 100 to 300 million years old. The finds document a period when this area lay underwater and was inhabited by prehistoric sea creatures.
