Akbar's Church

Akbar's Church is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Agra featuring red brick walls, pointed arches, and a central dome. The building sits on Wazirpura Road in the heart of the city.

The building was completely reconstructed in 1772 after Afghan invaders destroyed the original structure. This rebuilding shaped the form visitors see today.

The church reflects the presence of Portuguese missionaries who settled in Agra during the Mughal period. You can observe how this foreign community established their place of worship within the city.

You can visit the church and attend services, with guided tours available on weekdays. It is best to arrive in the morning when staff is present and the space is less crowded.

In 1610, three sons of Mughal Emperor Jahangir were baptized here by missionary Jerome Xavier. This event demonstrates how the church reached even the highest circles of local society.
