Our Lady of Dolours Basilica, church in Kerala, India
Our Lady of Dolours Basilica is a large church building in Thrissur with three prominent towers at its front, the central one reaching approximately 80 meters high. Inside, the space features eleven altars, painted biblical scenes on walls and ceilings, saint statues, and stained glass windows that fill the interior with light and color.
The first Christian community in the area was established in 1814 and served as an important gathering place for Thomas Christians. Construction of the new basilica began in 1929, the building was consecrated in 1940, and it was elevated to basilica status by Pope John Paul II in 1992.
The basilica serves as a religious center where the local community gathers regularly for Mass and prayer. During feast days, families dress in their finest clothes and participate in celebrations marked by singing, candles, and moments of quiet reflection together.
The basilica is open most days from early morning to evening with regular Mass times. Visitors should dress modestly, speak softly, and check the schedule ahead of special festivals when additional services are offered.
The basilica features a distinctive Bible Tower that rises prominently into the sky and is often noticed by visitors as a striking feature. This tall structure remains visible from afar and locals frequently mention it when recalling their memories of the building.
