The institution began in 1864 as Canning College within the Aminuddaulah Palace, named after a British viceroy. The institution changed into a university in 1921, when it adopted its current status and name.
The Tagore Library, operating since 1941, maintains a collection of 525,000 books and academic journals, supporting research and education across multiple disciplines.
The campus at Badshah Bagh sits in the central part of Lucknow and can be reached by public transport and major roads. Most academic activities take place during morning and afternoon hours, when students and faculty move around the grounds.
The Tagore Library opened in 1941 and has been collecting books and journals used across different fields of study. The library carries the name of Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore, the first Indian person to receive a Nobel Prize.
