Versova, Coastal neighborhood in Mumbai, India
Versova is a coastal neighborhood in northern Mumbai that stretches along the Arabian Sea with residential buildings, restaurants, and shops lining its streets. The layout descends gradually toward the beach, where the area meets the waterfront.
The neighborhood began as a Portuguese settlement called Vesave and transformed from a fishing village into an urban district as Mumbai expanded during the 20th century. This shift connected traditional fishing heritage with modern city life.
The Koli fishing community shapes the neighborhood with their traditional boats and daily routines along the shore. Their presence gives the area a distinctive maritime character that visitors notice immediately.
Versova station connects to the metro system for access to central Mumbai, while regular ferry services depart from the local jetty to Madh Island. Visit during the cooler months when the heat becomes more manageable.
Between 2015 and 2017, volunteers removed more than 5000 tons of waste from Versova Beach, drawing international attention to the effort. This large-scale cleanup made the beach accessible again and inspired similar initiatives elsewhere.
