Bahram Jung Mosque, Islamic prayer house in Nandanam, Chennai, India
The Bahram Jung Mosque features intricate carvings and ornate decorations throughout its interior and exterior stone surfaces, following Islamic design principles of the 1700s.
Muhammad Abdullah Qadir Nawaz Khan Bahadur Bahram Jung, a poet in the Carnatic court, established this mosque between 1789 and 1795 with support from Nawab Wallajah.
This mosque represents the connection between Mughal influence and South Indian traditions, serving as a center for Islamic faith in the Tamil Nadu region.
Located on Anna Salai, the mosque welcomes visitors from 5 AM to 10 PM daily, offering prayer spaces and community gathering areas.
The East India Company seized the mosque lands after financial issues arose following the death of Wallajah's successor, marking a significant shift in local power dynamics.
