Calcutta Rowing Club, Rowing club and heritage building in Kolkata, India
Calcutta Rowing Club is a rowing club and a Grade I heritage building located on the edge of Rabindra Sarobar lake in the south of Kolkata. The grounds include a boathouse and training areas that sit directly at the water's edge, used year-round for regattas and regular training.
The club was founded in 1858, making it one of the oldest sports establishments in the city. A severe cyclone in 1864 destroyed the original boathouse, but the club rebuilt and continued without interruption.
The club is considered one of the oldest rowing clubs in Asia, and that history is part of how members and local visitors relate to it today. On any given morning, you can watch rowers move across Rabindra Sarobar lake, a scene that has been part of the neighborhood's daily rhythm for generations.
The club sits directly on the shore of Rabindra Sarobar lake, so the boathouse and training areas are easy to see from the water's edge. Coming in the early morning gives you the best chance of seeing active training on the water.
In 1950, the club won trophies in multiple boat classes at the All-India Regatta, repeating a similar feat from 1936. Winning across several classes in the same national competition twice, 14 years apart, is an uncommon record in Indian rowing history.
