Calico Museum of Textiles

The Calico Museum of Textiles is located in Shahibaug and displays ancient fabrics, embroidered materials, and traditional garments across several galleries. The collection occupies a heritage building and spans textiles from different regions and periods of Indian history.

It was founded in 1949 by Gautam Sarabhai and initially operated from within Calico Mills before moving to Shahibaug in 1983 to accommodate its expanding collection.

The displays show textiles from across India, including fabrics once worn at Mughal courts and by regional rulers from the 15th through 19th centuries. These pieces reflect the craftsmanship and status symbols that shaped how people dressed and lived during those eras.

Visitors must book guided tours in advance, which run at different times throughout the week. It's best to reserve early to secure a spot.

The museum uses specialized temperature control and lighting to protect rare textiles, including pieces made with gold and silver threads. These conservation methods ensure that delicate historical fabrics remain intact for future visitors.
