Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial, Hall of Memory in Shahibaug, Ahmedabad, India
The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Memorial occupies the Moti Shahi Palace, a white marble building with decorative details, set within expansive gardens and water features. The site blends the original palace structure with gallery spaces created to display the exhibits.
Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the Moti Shahi Palace between 1618 and 1622 as a royal residence for the imperial family. Following India's independence, the building was transformed into a memorial honoring Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's role in the nation's formation.
The memorial displays photographs, documents, and personal belongings that show how Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel worked to bring together more than 500 princely states into one nation. Walking through the exhibits, you understand the scale of this political achievement through the objects on view.
The memorial opens in the morning and closes in the early afternoon, with guided tours available in several languages for visitors from India and abroad. The entire site is walkable, with the palace and gardens easy to navigate on foot.
The memorial preserves a study room where Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore lived and wrote poetry for six months in 1878. This room offers a glimpse into the private space of one of India's greatest poets during his time here.
