Delhi Gate, Monument gate in Daryaganj, India
Delhi Gate is a monumental gate made of red sandstone featuring intricate carvings and served as one of the main entrances to the former walled city of Shahjahanabad. The structure connects the older part of Delhi through the Daryaganj area to the newer sections of the city.
Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the construction of the gate in 1638 as part of the fortification system that defended the area. This project marked a significant expansion of the walled city at that time.
The gate displays stone elephant sculptures at its entrance, showing the craftsmanship valued during Mughal times in northern India. Visitors can observe how builders and stonemasons created such detailed works.
Access is available through the Daryaganj area, with paths connecting to areas farther north. The location sits within Old Delhi and is easy to reach on foot when exploring the surrounding streets.
The eastern section of the original fort wall was dismantled during the 1800s to make way for a major railway project. This construction completely reshaped the landscape surrounding the historic gate.
