Feroz Shah Kotla

Feroz Shah Kotla is a fortified complex in Central Delhi district built with massive stone walls, arrow slits, and reinforced granite blocks. The structure includes several levels and shows the typical construction methods of medieval fortifications in northern India.

The fortress emerged in the mid-14th century as part of a new city foundation built under the Tughlaq ruler. The complex served as a royal center and at times housed a very large population in the surrounding settlement.

The name comes from the ruler who once governed here and whose construction style followed medieval defensive principles. The complex clearly shows how military needs and courtly representation were combined in Delhi of that era.

The site is open daily for visitors and can be explored on foot, though you should plan enough time for a full walkthrough. The entrance is located in a quiet area that is easily reached from Delhi's main routes.

An ancient sandstone pillar was brought here and still stands inside the complex after being transported from a distant region. This monument dates from a time long before the fortress itself was built.
