The university was founded in February 1970 as a branch of Punjab Agricultural University. After the division of Punjab state, it became independent and grew into one of India's leading agricultural universities.
The campus includes a college for agriculture and another for engineering, training students in hands-on subjects. The buildings stand among wide experimental fields where new varieties are tested and farming methods are tried.
The library at the center of the campus holds hundreds of thousands of books and journals available for research and teaching. Visitors can ask at the entrance about access rules and opening hours.
The university publishes more research papers each year than any other agricultural institution in India. Its breeding programs contributed to major advances in Indian farming, including initiatives in grain and dairy production.
