Kattupalli Shipyard, Shipyard cum Captive Port Complex
Kattupalli Shipyard is a large facility north of Chennai designed for building and repairing ships. The yard contains multiple dry docks, specialized workshops with cutting and welding equipment, heavy cranes for moving large components, and one of India's largest ship-lifts that can elevate vessels weighing up to 23 tons. Block assembly takes place in covered workshops where sections are constructed before being joined together into complete vessels.
The shipyard was established in 2007 and began operations in 2012 to address India's need for domestic ship production capacity. Founded by Larsen & Toubro with government support as a special economic zone, it has since become instrumental in developing warships and submarines for the country. Recent expansions aim to increase annual production capacity to 25 ships and 60 repairs.
The shipyard reflects India's role in maritime manufacturing and demonstrates the country's capacity for self-reliant naval production. The work here blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary engineering practices.
The facility is located about 40 kilometers north of Chennai with good road and rail connections near the city airport. Visitors should plan ahead as the yard is primarily an operational facility and access to areas with heavy machinery and active ship construction may be restricted. The best time to visit is outside peak construction periods when movements around the site are easier to observe.
The ship-lift at Kattupalli was designed and built in-house by the yard itself, demonstrating its technical independence and standing as India's largest. Beyond military work, the facility has signed agreements with international navies including the US Navy to perform voyage repairs, positioning it as a regional hub for international naval cooperation.
