INS Kadamba, Naval base in Karwar, India
INS Kadamba is a naval base along the Arabian Sea coast near Karwar in Karnataka state. The installation spreads across a large coastal area and serves as a working harbor with docks, maintenance facilities, and support buildings for military vessels.
The base was established in the 1970s as part of strategic planning to strengthen naval operations along India's western coast. Its development reflected growing defence needs and marked an important expansion of maritime infrastructure during that period.
The naval base takes its name from the Kadamba tree, a plant species native to the Karnataka region that holds significance in local traditions and identity.
The base is located in Karwar, reachable by road or the nearby airport, with the surrounding town offering basic amenities for travelers. As a military facility, access is restricted and regular visitors cannot freely enter the grounds without prior authorization.
The facility has a large ship lift mechanism that can raise different types of vessels and position them for repairs and servicing. This engineering system allows both submarines and larger warships to be maintained and overhauled efficiently.
