Konar Dam, Multipurpose dam in Hazaribagh district, India
Konar Dam is a multipurpose water structure on the Konar River in Hazaribagh district that stretches for several kilometers and rises to about 58 meters high. The dam creates a large reservoir used for generating electricity, irrigation, and controlling floods.
The Damodar Valley Corporation built this dam following the devastating flood of 1943 and completed it in 1955. The project was part of the first phase of controlling the rivers in the region.
The reservoir waters support local fishing communities and enable irrigation for surrounding villages. People in the area depend on this water for their daily work and livelihoods.
The dam is accessible by road and offers fishing and boating on the reservoir. The visit is best during dry weather, especially in the drier months of the year.
This was the second dam project built by the Damodar Valley Corporation and showed new construction techniques for that era. The project influenced how later developments in the region were planned.
