Rihand River, Tributary river in Mirzapur district, India
The Rihand River is a major tributary in Uttar Pradesh that flows from the Matiranga hills southward through three states over approximately 160 kilometers. The waterway courses through Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh before reaching Uttar Pradesh in the east.
The waterway was once called Renu or Renuka in older times before taking its current name. Construction of the Rihand Dam near Pipri in the 20th century transformed it into a source of hydroelectric power for the surrounding region.
The river has been central to settlement patterns across the region for centuries, with villages and farming communities depending on its water and the fertile land nearby. The waterway shapes daily routines and agricultural cycles for those who live along its course.
The best time to visit is during or just after the monsoon season when water levels are fuller and the landscape is greener. Most access points along the river connect through local roads and village paths that link nearby communities.
The river creates several natural waterfalls along its path, most notably Rakasganda in Surajpur district where water drops vertically between rock formations. This natural cascade reveals the raw power of the flowing water in its most untamed state.
