Saurashtra University, university in Gujarat, India
Saurashtra University is a state public university in Rajkot, Gujarat, spread across more than 360 acres with academic buildings, libraries, student hostels, and sports facilities. The campus contains over 29 postgraduate departments with labs and classrooms, a large main library with books and digital resources, a new 24-hour circular library, Wi-Fi coverage, and modern teaching equipment.
The university was founded in 1967 after the Gujarat government passed legislation in 1965 to create an educational institution specifically for the Saurashtra region, separate from Gujarat University in Ahmedabad. Initially serving both Rajkot and Bhavnagar, it became focused solely on Rajkot after Bhavnagar University was established in 1978, allowing it to expand to its current size with hundreds of affiliated colleges.
The university takes its name from the historic Saurashtra region and reflects local pride in regional education. Walking through campus, you see students from different districts gathering in classrooms, libraries, and open spaces, creating a sense of shared academic purpose and community.
The campus is located along University Road in Rajkot, near the railway station and airport, making arrival and movement convenient for visitors and students. Hostels with separate facilities for men and women are available, along with health centers offering medical services, multiple dining areas, and the new 24-hour circular library provides a reliable study space at any time.
The university was the first of its kind in Gujarat to receive an A grade from NAAC in 2014, an organization that evaluates higher education institutions. The campus also houses specialized research centers such as the Centre of Excellence in Drug Discovery, which has existed since 2009 and focuses on developing new medications and technologies.
