Shahayadri Tiger reserve, Wildlife refuge in Maharashtra, India

Shahayadri Tiger Reserve is a protected area spanning across four districts in the Western Ghats, encompassing Koyna Wildlife Sanctuary and Chandoli National Park. The terrain features evergreen, semi-evergreen, and moist deciduous forests with multiple entry points and visitor centers.

The reserve was established in 2008 to protect Bengal tigers in the region. A major breakthrough came in 2018 when camera traps captured the first direct evidence of tigers present in the protected area.

Local communities surrounding the reserve hold deep knowledge about forest resources passed down through generations. This traditional understanding shapes how people interact with and protect the woodland today.

The area has multiple entry points and interpretation centers where organized wildlife safaris can be arranged. The best time to visit is between October and February when weather conditions are pleasant and wildlife sightings are more likely.

The reserve sits at the meeting point of three states where Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Goa converge. This location creates a rare convergence of different forest types in a single protected area.
