Powai, Residential suburb in central Mumbai, India
Powai is a suburb in central Mumbai that extends along the shores of a lake, surrounded by hills and modern residential complexes. The area combines green spaces with shopping centers, schools and office towers that spread between the water and the forested slopes.
The transformation from farmland to residential settlement began in the 1980s with the development of private housing projects. The link road between Jogeshwari and Vikhroli opened access and accelerated the growth of the neighborhood in the 1990s.
The Hiranandani development introduced private residential planning and public spaces to Mumbai, creating a template for later township projects in the city. Families use the lakeside promenade for morning walks and jogging, while small temples and prayer halls structure the daily rhythm of residents.
Most residential buildings and offices cluster in the southern and eastern parts of the lake, while the northern section remains less densely built. Auto-rickshaws and private taxi services connect the different sectors of the settlement and make it easier to move within the neighborhood.
The campus of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay borders directly on residential neighborhoods and opens its pathways to joggers and walkers from the surrounding area. In the early morning hours, students and residents share the green spaces for sports activities and relaxation.
