Avinashi Temple, Hindu temple in Tirupukkoliyur, Tamil Nadu, India
Avinashi Temple is a Hindu temple in Tirupukkoliyur, in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu, marked by a seven-tiered Rajagopuram tower at its entrance. Inside, the compound holds a main sanctum dedicated to Shiva, several smaller shrines, and sacred wells spread across the grounds.
The temple dates back to around the 10th century and was later expanded and reshaped by the Chola, Hoysala, and Mysore dynasties over several centuries. Each of these rulers left a visible mark on the layout and appearance of the complex.
This temple is considered the foremost among 276 sacred Shiva shrines and draws pilgrims from across South India. Visitors can watch devotees performing rituals and walk through chambers lined with stone carvings and religious wall paintings.
The temple is open most days during daytime hours, with longer access periods around new moon days. Visitors walk barefoot inside the compound, so comfortable footwear that is easy to remove is a good idea before entering.
A single stone block was carved into a ceremonial lamp pillar standing about 70 feet (21 meters) tall, decorated with reliefs of deities and saints. Monolithic lamp pillars of this height are rarely found even at major South Indian temples.
