Dudhsagar Dairy, Dairy in Gujarat, India
Dudhsagar Dairy is a cooperative milk processing facility in Mehsana that collects and processes milk daily from hundreds of farmers in surrounding villages. The facility features modern machinery, cold storage, and multiple processing sections for products including ghee, butter, yogurt, and milk powder.
The dairy was founded in 1960 to ensure farmers received fair prices for their milk, beginning its first milk chilling plant in 1964. Over the decades it grew from a small local effort into one of India's largest dairy cooperatives.
The name Dudhsagar means milk ocean, reflecting the central role milk plays in this cooperative's identity. The facility is a daily gathering point for farmers from surrounding villages who deliver their milk in the morning and share experiences about their work.
Visitors typically see the highest activity in the early morning hours between 5 and 8 am when farmers bring milk and trucks arrive for collection. The best time to observe the daily operations is early morning when milk gathering and processing are in full motion.
The facility was designed by architect Achyut Kanvinde in a brutalist style using bare concrete and officially opened in the early 1970s. This architectural design symbolized self-reliance at the time and became a landmark of the local farming movement.
